So, you know it’s time to either lay down a new asphalt driveway or replace your current driveway. There are asphalt driveway contractors in Fairfield available year-round… but when is really the best time to have your driveway installed?
The answer, in fact, is quite easy: right now. Summer is almost always the best time to lay down asphalt. This isn’t a random choice, either. There are several reasons that summer is the best time.
Why Summer Is the Best Time to Hire Fairfield Asphalt Driveway Contractors
- Asphalt likes the heat.
Most asphalt is applied hot, and that’s for a reason. It dries harder and more resistant to moisture that way. In most cases, installing asphalt in temperatures lower than 50°F isn’t a good idea. While there are “cold asphalt” mixes designed for use in cooler climates that rarely see hot weather, it’s generally not as strong as standard hot asphalt.
- Rain can harm the installation.
Asphalt can be installed during spring or fall, if the temperatures are warm enough, but this creates a new issue: greater chance of rainfall. Rain can interrupt the installation of your driveway, or cause problems during the curing process. The drive could end up more prone to cracking or -in worse case scenarios- the rain could destabilize the ground beneath the driveway, wrecking the effort.
- Asphalt needs to be transported hot.
Another reason that “the hotter the better” is a rule of thumb with asphalt installs is that it needs to be carried hot from the source. The further away the job site is from the plant, and the colder the outside air, the harder it becomes to maintain a proper temperature for the asphalt mix. If it becomes too cool during transport, it will make installation more difficult or result in a weaker final blacktop.
